The Societas Europaea Herpetologica (SEH) is the European association of herpetologists .

History and structure

The Societas Europaea Herpetologica was founded in September 1979 by herpetologists from eight European countries in the Museum Koenig in Bonn . It has almost 350 members from most European countries and around the world. As a rule, international conferences are held in different locations in Europe every two years. The first general assembly took place in 1981 in the Natural History Museum Vienna . Members can attend for a reduced fee. The members' magazine Amphibia-Reptilia has been published quarterly since August 1980 and is written in English. In addition, the free online journal Herpetology Notes has been available since 2008 and is updated once a year.

The SEH is an international non-governmental member of the IUCN . The organization is controlled by its statutes and statutes as well as by the body whose members are elected at the ordinary general meetings.

The Societas Europaea Herpetologica has three committees: the Nature Conservation Committee was established in 1981 and deals with the conservation of herpetofauna in all parts of Europe and adjacent regions, and its members form the IUCN Species Survival Commission's European Reptiles and Amphibians Expert Group. The results of the work of the Conservation Committee are published in the Amphibia-Reptilia magazine and other publications. The mapping committee was established in 1983 by a team from the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle and deals with the distribution of species. The Taxonomy Committee is dedicated to the taxonomy and nomenclature of the European herpetofauna. In 1997 the SEH published the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles in Europe (with a second edition in 2004) and in 2012 the New Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles in Europe (NA2RE) followed. The SEH has developed a pan-European herpetological network that organizes meetings and advises herpetologists and national herpetological societies in Europe and elsewhere.
