Gaston Hardouin Andlau

Gaston Hardouin Joseph, comte d'Andlau (born January 1, 1824 in Nancy , † January 1892 in Buenos Aires ) was a French general .

d'Andlau attended the Saint-Cyr Military School , graduating in 1844 with the rank of lieutenant . D'Andlau was appointed to the General Staff the following year . As a captain, he distinguished himself in the Crimean War in the storming of the Mamelon Vert and in the conquest of Sevastopol . After the end of the Italian War , d'Andlau was sent to Vienna as a military attachée in 1859 and he represented his government as commissioner in settling the border between Turkey and Serbia .

In 1870 he was assigned to the General Staff of the Rhine Army as a Colonel , took part in the decisive battles of the Franco-Prussian War and advanced to become Commander-in-Chief of the Rhine Army. As such, d'Andlau took part in the battle of Metz and surrendered as the commandant of the Metz Fortress and handed it over to Friedrich Karl of Prussia on October 27, 1870 .

During his internment in Hamburg he wrote several works, including a. also a representation of the events in Metz from his point of view. It was precisely these publications that caused a sensation, as they accused Marshal François-Achille Bazaine of complicity in the "accident at Metz" and contributed significantly to its indictment and conviction.

This meant a huge break in his career for Andrew. Due to the influence of the general staff, he was deliberately passed over for a few years and was only able to succeed as a brigadier general in 1879 . Before that, however , he had been appointed senator in 1876 . In 1886 he was transferred to the reserve of the generals. Since he had apparently taken part in General Caffarel's medals , he was threatened with arrest in 1887, which he escaped by fleeing. He was sentenced to five years in prison in contumaciam .

General Gaston Hardouin Joseph d'Andlau, Comte de Epoux died in New Orleans in January 1892.
