The cyclone in Mauritius in 1892 killed 1,200 people and destroyed large parts of the island.

The storm

Mauritius is often hit by cyclones (see cyclones in Mauritius ). However, the cyclone that devastated the island on April 29, 1892 was unusually strong and caused huge damage. 1200 people died and 50,000 were left homeless. The west of the island around the capital Port Louis was particularly hard hit by the devastation. Even massive stone buildings could not withstand the wind pressure. At its peak, wind speeds of over 120 miles / hour (192 km / h) were measured.

Commemoration

A number of monuments commemorate the victims of the storm. In the capital Port Louis is the monument erected in memory of the dead of 1892 cyclone in front of the West Cemetery in the city. The memorial, a monumental obelisk , has been a listed building since 1968 .

A similar monument is located in the Bois Marchand Cemetery in Terre Rouge on the motorway towards Pamplemousses . The cenotaph in the form of an obelisk was inaugurated in the presence of Governor Hubert Jerningham and commemorates the victims of the storm.
