Hans Ludwig von der Au (born February 16, 1892 in Eberstadt ; † May 1, 1955 in Darmstadt ) was a German theologian and folklorist .

Life

Hans Ludwig von der Au was the son of the Nieder-Modau pastor Hermann von der Au (* 1865, † 1932) and his wife Katharine von der Au born. Horst (* 1868).

He sprang from an old Evangelical Lutheran family from Maar in Upper Hesse , which has been securely present since 1532. It is said to go back to a noble family from Fulda , which was documented in 1338 with Hermann von der Aue.

After graduating from high school, Hans von der Au studied Protestant theology in Tübingen and Gießen from 1910 , but interrupted his studies in 1914 and fought as a volunteer in the First World War in France and on the Eastern Front . After fleeing from captivity in Siberia , he returned to Darmstadt via India in 1920 . He continued his studies (among others Wilhelm Diehl continued) in 1921 ordained and in 1924 for theology Lic. Doctorate. He was vicar in Erbach , then parish assistant and administrator in Neu-Isenburg and from 1923 to 1925 second pastor in Reichelsheim . Subsequently, from 1925 to 1934, he was a state youth pastor and during this time began his folklore studies, especially in the field of Hessian folk dances. With a thesis on this topic (see below) he was awarded a Dr. phil. been awarded a doctorate.

The last period of his activity as a state youth pastor was marked by disputes between church youth groups and the Hitler Youth ; von der Au gave up the office in 1934 and worked until he was called up in 1944 as a teacher at the Justus Liebig High School in Darmstadt. He was a member of the SA since 1934 and of the NSDAP since 1937 .

In addition to his work in the school service, he continued his ethnographic research. For example, in 1937 and 1939, together with Heinrich Winter (1898–1964) , he undertook two trips to record the customs in the Spessart on behalf of the State Office for Folklore in the Bavarian Homeland Association . Also together with Winter in 1941 he took part in ethnographic surveys in the resettlement camps of the Dobrudja Germans.

After the Second World War , he was assistant pastor in Darmstadt-Eberstadt in 1945/46 , employed in the Hessian State Archives in 1947 and hospital chaplain in 1947/48, before returning to school service and working as a teacher at the Viktoriaschule in Darmstadt .

In May 2019, a street in Eberstadt named after Hans von der Au was also affected by a decision by the Darmstadt municipal authorities to change eight street names that are reminiscent of Nazi supporters.
