Filippo Pagnamenta

Filippo Pagnamenta (born December 7, 1826 in Golasecca , † July 11, 1892 in Milan ) was a Swiss politician and Italian major general .

Life

Filippo Pagnamenta's family came from Sonogno . He was the son of the lawyer and state councilor Giovanni Stefano Pagnamenta (* 1795 in Sonogno; † 1839 ibid) and his wife Clara (née Guerra).

In 1847 he took part in the Sonderbund War as a professional soldier with a liberal disposition as a sub-lieutenant . In 1848 he was promoted to lieutenant . With Domenico Pedrazzi (1815-1859) he took part in the volunteer Simonetta-Vicari column, which consisted mainly of Ticino snipers , in the first campaign of the Italian Risorgimento . The column was led by Natale Vicari and Francesco Simonetta (1813–1863).

After his promotion to captain in 1852, he joined the federal general staff and participated in the destruction of the Tipografia del Gottardo printing works in Faido , which published the opposition newspaper Il Patriota del Ticino , in 1855 on the occasion of the armed uprising of the Liberals ( Pronunciamento ) .

From 1855 to 1856 he represented the Liberals in the Ticino Cantonal Council .

From 1856 to 1858 he took part in the French Foreign Legion in the Africa campaign and fought in the Sardinian-Piedmontese army in the second Italian War of Independence in 1859 . In November 1860, Pagnamenta, who had meanwhile been promoted to major, took part with the 24th Sardinian-Piedmontese Infantry Regiment in the siege of Gaeta , which led to the collapse of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and formed one of the cornerstones for the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. For his intervention in Gaeta, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Savoy in 1861 . In 1866 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in 1870 to colonel , in 1877 commander of the Roma brigade and in 1880 he achieved the rank of major general . In 1884, now in command of the Cuneo Infantry Brigade, he was appointed judge of the Supreme War and Navy Tribunal. In November 1885, Pagnamenta was retired at his request.

Filippo Pagnamenta was unmarried throughout his life.
