Hermann Schubert (Benedictine)

Hermann Schubert OSB (born February 3, 1826 in Vienna-Roßau ; † September 7, 1892 in Kaltenleuthaben , Lower Austria ; actually Anton Eduard Schubert ) was an Austrian Benedictine , preacher and pastor .

Life

Schubert, son of Franz Theodor Schubert from his second marriage and step-brother of the composer Franz Schubert , came after the visit of the Vienna Schottengymnasiums in the 1844 Schottenstift one. He completed his studies in theology at the University of Vienna and was ordained a priest in 1849. In 1851 he was briefly assistant for mathematics and natural history at the Schottengymnasium, but then turned to pastoral care. From 1852 to 1861 he was first a cooperator in Pulkau and then in the Gumpendorf parish . In 1862 he was appointed preacher of the monastery and in this function, due to his serious, moderate and agile manner, achieved great popularity, especially among the noble Viennese society. He also taught religion at the Schottengymnasium from 1882 . He ended both activities in 1889. Schubert was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit with the Crown and the Salvator Medal.
