Stanisław Ostrowski (born October 29, 1892 in Lviv ; † November 22, 1982 in London ) was a Polish doctor, officer and politician in the 20th century.

Life

At the age of 22, in 1914, he joined the so-called Pilsudski - Legions (part of the "Polish Army" ), and later took part in the defense of Lviv against the Ukrainians (1918) and in the fighting in the Polish-Soviet war in 1919-21 part. He then continued to study medicine at the University of Lviv , received his doctorate in 1924 and opened a medical practice in his hometown. He was also a member of the Sejm in the 1920s and 1930s . In 1936 he took over the office of mayor of Lviv and led the city's defense against the Germans in 1939 . After the capitulation of Lviv and the handover of the city from the Germans to the Soviets ( Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact ), he was arrested and sentenced to a long sentence in the Gulag . Discharged in 1942, he went to the Middle East with the Polish army formed in the Soviet Union and later took part in the campaign in Italy as a military doctor. a. at the Battle of Monte Cassino .

After the war, Ostrowski settled as a doctor in Great Britain and, after the death of August Zaleski in 1972, took over the office of President-in-Exile , which, unlike his predecessor, he held for seven years until 1979 in accordance with the constitution of April 23, 1935 exercised.
