Gustav von Bonstetten

Baron Gustav Karl von Bonstetten von Rougemont (born February 16, 1816 in Bern , † March 9, 1892 in Hyères ) was a Swiss archaeologist .

Life

Gustav von Bonstetten came from the Bernese line of the noble house of Bonstetten and was the son of Karl David von Bonstetten (born July 6, 1783 in Bern; † February 5, 1851 ibid), landowner of Valeyres-sous-Rances and chamberlain at the Bavarian court and his wife Sophie Elisabetha (* December 4, 1783 in Bern; † January 2, 1865 ibid), a daughter of Friedrich von Graffenried (1759–1798), mayor and captain . His grandfather was the writer Karl Viktor von Bonstetten .

He went on study trips to Germany , Italy and the Orient .

In 1841 he settled as a private scholar with changing places of residence in Bern, Thun , Valeyres-sous-Rances, Paris and Hyères; However, in 1878, after his conversion to Catholicism, he renounced the Bern citizenship and became a citizen in Rüttenen in Solothurn .

Gaoutabry dolmen

In the 1840s he began, together with the archaeologist Albert Jahn , with the systematic research of Swiss burial mounds and grave sites in the canton of Bern and in western Switzerland , the results of which he presented in various publications. He also carried out extensive archaeological excavation work in southern France and in 1845 uncovered a magnificent mosaic in Orbe , which, however, was almost completely destroyed the following year. He was also the discoverer of the Gaoutabry dolmens .

In 1873 he donated his important collection of prehistoric and early historical antiquities, rounded off by purchases, to the Antiquarium of the City of Bern; it formed the basis of today's Bern Historical Museum .

He also founded the Museum of Art and History in Draguignan .

Gustav von Bonstetten was since 1844 with Germaine Adelheid Mathilde (born September 28, 1823; † May 5, 1903), daughter of the banker Dyonis Maria de Rougemont (1791–1863), whose father Denis de Rougemont was the second largest shareholder when the Banque was founded de France was married. Gustav von Bonstetten was the author of many richly illustrated publications and published numerous small notes in the Anzeiger für Schweizerische Geschichte und Altertumskunde as well as in the Historische Zeitung and in the treatises of the Historisches Verein von Bern . His main work is his three-volume Recueil d'antiquités suisses . He also published archaeological maps of the cantons of Bern, Vaud , Friborg and the French department of Var between 1870 and 1888 .
