Fritz Eunike

Friedrich Carl Timotheus Eunike (born January 24, 1831 in Bad Freienwalde (Oder) , † January 5, 1892 in Wittenberg ) was a German officer and honorary citizen of Wittenberg.
Life
Military time
Friedrich Carl Timotheus Eunike was born on January 24, 1831 in Bad Freienwalde as the son of a mining director of the alum works . As Fritz (a nickname retained from early childhood) Eunike, he joined the cadet corps in 1842, and was accepted into the artillery as an ensign in 1848. During his military career he served in Magdeburg , Wittenberg , Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder) , from where he was assigned to the war in France in 1870 . During the occupation in France he held the rank of captain and served as battery chief. Various commands followed, including at the military training area in Jüterbog . Here Eunike got involved in the construction of the Jüterbog city facilities. Eunike was considered extremely consistent in his decisions. After an argument with a superior, he decided to retire from military service.
Wittenberg time
As a major retired Eunike moved to Wittenberg and bought a house on Clausstrasse (today Puschkinstrasse). On the orders of Kaiser Wilhelm I through the cabinet order of May 30, 1873, Wittenberg began on June 11, 1873 to tear down the fortress walls around the city. In order to manage this work, you needed a personality who would be at the service of this voluntary task. Eunike, who was already able to use his gardening skills in Jüterbog, found a wide field of activity here to bring his skills to bear. First the city gates in Wittenberg were uncovered and a dam was raised through the city moat in the extension of Juristenstrasse, which led in a straight line into Grünstrasse (today Breitscheidstrasse) in order to open up traffic routes in addition to the old city gates. Then the demolition of the ramparts and the redesign of the fortress area began. For the execution of the work, Eunike received an unpaid position on January 19, 1879 as a department head for the deconsolidation system in the city council. He was also a member of the waterworks commission.
His main work was the design of the city's facilities, which also brought health benefits to the city, as the disgusting musty smell disappeared from the old city moats. The large trees, some of which are still preserved today, in the area of the former fortress belt, today's city park , were planted under his direction. In memory of “his outstanding contribution to the beautification and development of the city of Wittenberg, especially during the deconsolidation”, Fritz Eunike was given honorary citizenship of the city of Wittenberg on February 27, 1891 . He died on the night of January 5th to 6th, 1892, shortly before the age of 61, of an asthmatic disease.
Memorials
Eunike found his final resting place in the northern cemetery of Dresdener Strasse in Wittenberg, in the immediate vicinity of the main entrance. On his tombstone, which is designed as a simple natural stone cross, there is the inscription “Here in God my father the king rests. Major Fritz Eunike b. d. January 24, 1830 d. January 5, 1892 ”. Because of his work in Jüterbog, a memorial stone was erected there to honor him as the creator of the complex. In 1883 the desire arose to erect a monument to Eunike in Wittenberg as well. Master builder Paul Ferdinand Groth designed the memorial, and sculptor Jokesch created the bronze relief, which was cast in Lauchhammer. The bronze relief is located on a bench column made of polished granite stone in today's Eunikepark and was inaugurated on August 10, 1894. Under the bronze relief, carved into granite, is written “To the creator of the facilities - Major a. D. and city councilor - Fritz Eunike - honorary citizen of Wittenberg - his grateful fellow citizens - 1893 ”. There is also a memorial plaque in Wittenberg on the bordered southern edge of the Kasinoberg opposite the castle church .
