Clarence Edward "Steamer" Horning (born November 15, 1892 in Phoenix , New York , † January 24, 1982 in Beverly Hills , Michigan ) was an American American football player . He played, among other things, in the National Football League with the Toledo Maroons .

Player career

Clarence Horning studied at Colgate University , where he also played American football . Because of his athletic achievements, he was elected All-American as team captain in 1916 . In 1920 he became a professional football player, playing for the Detroit Heralds . After the season, the Heralds had to stop playing and Horning signed up with the Detroit Tigers , who also had to stop playing during the season. Horning ended the season with the Buffalo All-Americans . The next two years he ran for the Toledo Maroons and became a teammate of the later member of the College Football Hall of Fame Herb Stein and his brother Russ Stein . The Maroons were able to make their first season in the NFL positive. Their five wins were offset by two defeats and two draws, including a 0-0 win against eventual NFL champions Canton Bulldogs . In the same year, Horning was voted All-Pro . After the Maroons moved to Kenosha , Wisconsin after the 1923 season , Horning ended his career.
