Gabriel Stan (born June 25, 1952 ) is a Romanian football coach who is currently without a club. His nickname is Gabello .
Career as a player
Not too much is known about Stan's career as a player. During his active career he only worked for three clubs. After moving from Minerul Lupeni to Jiul Petroșani in 1972, he won the Romanian Cup with Petroșani a season later . Three more years passed before he changed clubs again. From 1977 to 1981 he played for Chimia Râmnicu Vâlcea , after which he ended his career as a football player.
Career as a coach
Period from 1982 to 2000
After he had looked after the team of Tractorul Brașov from 1982 to 1983 , it took five years before he took over his second coaching post. From 1988 he was coach of Metrom Brașov for five seasons , his tenure there ended in 1992.
In 1995 he briefly took over FC Brașov for the first time , which he will coach four more times during his coaching career. Other previous coaching stations were Astra Ploieşti (1996-1999) and CSM Reşiţa (1999-2000).
FC Brasov
Gabriel Stan is known as the last coach who qualified FC Brașov in a European competition. In the 2000/01 season he managed with the team from Brașov third place and thus qualification for the 2001/02 UEFA Cup , where the team failed at Inter Milan . Since he signed a contract with Astra Ploieşti during the break of the season , he was no longer on the coaching bench during the games against the Italian team.
But on the 9th day of the 2001/02 season he gave up his post at Astra Ploieşti and returned to FC Brașov , where he had to give up his post on the 23rd day of the season, due to poor results.
Zimbru Chișinău
The following season, Gabriel Stan was appointed coach of the Moldovan first division club Zimbru Chișinău . With this team he took part in the qualifying round of the 2002/03 UEFA Cup , where you surprisingly could beat the Swedish team IFK Göteborg , but failed in the next round at the Spanish representative Betis Sevilla .
Nationally, Stan reached 2nd place in the table with Zimbru and only had to admit defeat to his Romanian coaching colleague Gavril Balint , who coached Sheriff Tiraspol 's championship team. Stan also won the Moldovan Cup in the final against FC Nistru Otaci . At the end of the season, however, he gave up his post.
Return to Romania
At the beginning of 2004, Stan coached FC Vaslui in Divizia B , but only stayed there for a few months.
The 2004/05 season had only just started when he took over FC Brașov again, where the club dismissed its predecessor after a series of five defeats. But he did not succeed in the turnaround either and he was finally dismissed after the 20th match day. The club was relegated at the end of the season. During the 2005/06 season he coached the second division team Minerul Lupeni .
After two seasons Stan was coach of FC Brașov for the third time . On the 10th day of the second division season 2006/07 he took over the troop that was in 9th place at the time. During the winter break he was dismissed from the club's management for the fourth time. His coaching chair was taken over by a transitional coach, who should coach the team until the end of the season, the return of Răzvan Lucescu was planned for the new season . This season went down in the annals as the worst in the club's history.
A few months after his release in April 2007, he got the coaching position at local and league rivals Forex Brasov , which he coached ten games. The team slipped from 3rd to 4th place, the promotion was missed and Gabriel Stan's contract was no longer extended.
2008 to 2010
At the beginning of 2008, his personnel at FCM Câmpina was under discussion, but the two sides could not agree. On March 18, Gebriel Stan was the coach of the then first division UTA Arad , which at that time was third from bottom in the table and three points away from a non-relegation place. After six matchdays he vacated his post due to the 1: 4 defeat against Politehnica Iași , meanwhile the team was already eight points away from the saving bank and rose at the end of the season as penultimate.
In the 2008/09 season he was coach of the third division club FC Dunărea Călăraşi , an ambitious club that aimed for promotion this season. However, he left the club after a few months because there were several conflicts with players who did not receive salaries from their employer. At this point, Dunărea Călăraşi still had a realistic chance of promotion. Ultimately, the second occupation of Steaua Bucharest rose, Dunărea Călăraşi ended the season on a disappointing 6th place in the table.
After Stan did not get a coaching post in 2010, he hosted several programs on local radio and television in Brașov on the topic of football.
2011
In 2011 he coached Unirea Alba Iulia for a short time , who at the time was fighting to stay in League II . On April 21, he gave up his post to be officially appointed coach of the newly formed Moldovan second division club FC Ursidos Chişinău the next day . After eight years, Stan returned to Moldova . In an interview from 2010, he stated that Zimbru Chișinău and FC Brașov were his favorite teams and that he would train them at any time without a salary.
He took over the team on the 23rd matchday and made it to 2nd place in the table at the end of the season. After the first-placed Locomotiva Bălți had not applied for a license for the highest Moldovan league, Ursidos had the opportunity to play in the first division, but they were denied the license for the first division. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season there was a merger with the first division club FC Milsami , resulting in FC Milsami-Ursidos . Gabriel Stan was first introduced as the new coach and coached the team until the winter break, after which his contract expired and was not renewed.
