Ioan Petcu (born May 1, 1959 in Hunedoara ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . He played a total of 391 games in the Romanian Divizia A and the Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnokság .
Career as a player
Petcu began his career in his hometown of Hunedoara with Corvinul . There he experienced the most successful time of the club as a player, when the club under coach Mircea Lucescu belonged to the Romanian top after promotion in 1980 and qualified for the UEFA Cup in the 1981/82 season . Petcu remained loyal to Corvinul until 1990 when he moved abroad after the end of communism and joined APEP Pelendriou , who played in the 2nd division of Cyprus . This change did not bring Petcu the success he had hoped for, so that in 1991 he moved to Hungary and joined Diósgyőri VTK . After just one year he returned to Romania and ended his career in 1994 after two more seasons with Corvinul, which had meanwhile been relegated to Divizia B.
National team
Petcu came in his career on two missions for the Romanian national soccer team , which were almost four years apart. He made his debut on May 1, 1982 against Cyprus , his second and last international match he played on March 2, 1986 against Egypt .
Career as a coach
After the end of his active career, Petcu initially worked as a coach at Corvinul. The club missed promotion to Divizia A in 1995 as runner-up of its season after the relegation game against Sportul Studențesc , the third-bottom of the Divizia Națională 1994/95 , was lost 0-1. Petcu later became a coach at Mureșul Deva and Aurul Certej and was coach of third division Aurul Brad in autumn 2004 , before coaching second division Unirea Sânnicolau Mare in spring 2005 . After the local authorities no longer promised the club any further financial support in summer 2005, Petcu took over the coaching position at the newly founded FC Corvinul 2005 Hunedoara . In summer 2006 he returned to Unirea Sânnicolau Mare, who as Table of the season 2005/06 in the League III was staying. In 2008 the promotion to League II was made, but the club's management decided to sell the second division right to the newly founded FCM Târgu Mureş . Petcu left the financially unstable club and returned to FC Corvinul 2005 Hunedoara on August 24, 2008. In September 2008, however, the club had to cease playing before the 7th matchday of League III and on October 28, 2008 finally withdrew from the championship. Subsequently, Petcu did not find a new club until he was introduced on July 6, 2009 as the new coach of FC Bihor Oradea . After the home defeat against FC Baia Mare on October 24, 2009, his coaching contract was terminated. In 2010 he was initially the sports director of third division club FC Hunedoara and took over the coaching position on November 2, 2010, after the previous coach Eusebiu Șuvagău had announced his resignation. Although the team was at the top of the table in their season at the time, they missed promotion to League II at the end of the season in fifth place. Ioan Petcu was then dismissed in July 2011.
