Chiajna is a place in the southwest of the Ilfov district in Romania and is located in the west of the capital Bucharest . In 2007 the community had 8,162 inhabitants.

Surname

In one version, it is said that Chiajna was named after the wife of Cernică Știrbey, a Wallachian who owned the land. His compatriots from Cernavodă settled the area and built the first houses.

Another story tells that the name comes from the Baroness Chiajna (approx. 1525–1588, Constantinople), a daughter of Petru Rareş , a voivod of Moldova , who was the illegitimate child of Ștefan cel Mare . She was the wife of the Wallachian and Prince Mircea V Ciobanul. Chiajna is portrayed in Romanian literature as a famous and fearless woman.
