Ion "Brini" Munteanu (born June 7, 1955 in Buria , Dolj district , † March 24, 2006 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian football player . He denied 281 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A .

Career

Munteanu started playing football at Steaua "23 August" Bucharest at the age of ten before joining Autobuzul Bucharest in 1967 . There he moved up in 1974 in the squad of the first team that played in the Romanian second division, the Divizia B , at the time. In Autobuzul he stayed until the winter break in 1978/79, when the club was in last place the Divizia B and feed it to local rivals Sportul Studenţesc gave, in the Divizia A played. There he celebrated his debut for his new club on April 22, 1979. In the further course of the season Sportul reached the Romanian Cup final , but lost there to Steaua Bucharest . Munteanu had been exchanged for Mircea Sandu at the break .

In the 1979/80 season Munteanu was a regular at Sportul. In the 1980s, the club always fought for qualification for the UEFA Cup , which they did for the first time in the 1982/83 season, when they fell out in the first round against SK Sturm Graz . In the following season , the club was able to repeat this success, with Munteanu contributed seven goals, which is the best goal rate of his career. In the subsequent UEFA Cup competition , the club won the first leg against Inter Milan , but was eliminated again.

In the following years Sportul became a regular in the top group and Munteanu achieved the best placement of his career with the runner-up in 1986 . After that, the club had to give up its best player, Gheorghe Hagi , to Steaua Bucharest and was unable to build on this success and was even in danger of relegation in the 1987/88 season . He was only able to save himself on the last day of the match.

In the winter break of 1988/89 Munteanu left the capital and moved to Chimia Râmnicu Vâlcea in the Divizia B. There he missed the return to the House of Lords with his club in second place behind Jiul Petroșani . He then ended his career and later became a coach in the children and youth sector at Sportul Studențesc. On March 24, 2006, he died of cirrhosis of the liver .

National team

Munteanu played 24 games for the Romanian national football team . He made his debut on October 14, 1979 in the friendly against the Soviet Union , the debut of Constantin Cernăianu as the Romanian national coach. Under Cernăianu he became a regular in the national jersey, his successor Valentin Stănescu relied on him, so that Munteanu was to be found 14 times in a row on the starting line-up until the friendly against Poland on March 25, 1981. After pausing two games, he returned with the World Cup qualifier against England on April 29, 1981.

After the missed World Cup qualification, the new national coach Mircea Lucescu initially no longer considered Munteanu.
