The Tudor Vladimirescu Stadium ( Romanian Stadionul Tudor Vladimirescu ) was a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Romanian city of Târgu Jiu . In the end, it offered space for 9,200 spectators and served the football club Pandurii Târgu Jiu as the home game venue until 2015.

history

Construction of the stadium began in 1960 and was completed and officially opened in 1963. The sports facility was located in the city of Târgu Jiu, which now has around 83,000 inhabitants in the historical region of Little Wallachia in southwest Romania. The stadium is named after Tudor Vladimirescu (1780-1821), a Romanian revolutionary and leader of the Wallachian uprising against Turkish rule in Romania of 1821, during which he occupied Bucharest with his troops . After negotiations with the Ottoman Empire to prevent an invasion of Bucharest began, Tudor Vladimirescu was executed after he was accused of treason.

The facility has been renovated several times in its history. Modernization work took place on the sports facility in 2005, 2011 and 2013, largely due to the increased presence of Pandurii Târgu Jiu, who qualified for the top Romanian football league, Liga 1 , for the first time in the 2005/06 season . The first construction work on the Tudor Vladimirescu Stadium can be seen in this context. As a result, Pandurii Târgu Jiu established himself in the highest Romanian football league and has played there continuously ever since. In the 2012/13 season the club even reached the Romanian runner-up behind Steaua Bucharest .

In 2009, the final of the Cupa României , the Romanian football cup, was played in the Tudor Vladimirescu Stadium in Târgu Jiu. In the sold-out stadium, CFR Cluj defeated FC Timișoara 3-0.

In 2015 the old stadium was demolished to make way for a new building with the same name. On October 25, 2019 the new Tudor Vladimirescu Stadium was inaugurated with the game Pandurii Târgu Jiu against Universitatea Cluj (0: 1).
