The Divizia A 1996/97 was the 57th season of the second highest Romanian football league and the fifth of the Divizia A as only the second highest football league. Foresta Fălticeni and CSM Resita rose in the Divizia A on.

mode

The league was played in two seasons with 18 teams each. The two winners rose to the renamed Divizia A, while the last two clubs in both groups were relegated to the third-class Divizia C. There were three points for a win, one for a draw and no point for a loss. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, it was not the goal difference that decided , but the direct comparison .
