The Liga II 2016/17 was the 77th season of the second highest Romanian football league . It started on August 6, 2016 and ended on June 3, 2017 . Games were closed from mid-December 2016 to the end of February 2017 ( winter break ).

Promoted to League 1 were Juventus Bucharest and Sepsi OSK Sfântu Gheorghe , who played in League III a year earlier. SC Bacau and FC Baia Mare (4th and 6th respectively last season) had withdrawn to League III for financial reasons.

The League II was run on a single track for the first time. 20 clubs were registered for this. ACS Berceni withdrew after 15 games. Șoimii Pâncota was expelled for unpaid debt.

The two first-placed teams rose directly to League 1. The third placed could qualify for the league 1 via the play-offs. The last five teams were relegated to League III.
