Pierre Perrault

Pierre Perrault (born June 29, 1927 in Montreal Québec , † June 24, 1999 in  L'Isle-aux-Coudres , Canada ) was a Canadian film director and author . He was one of the most important filmmakers in Canada. His film style is assigned to Direct Cinema .

Career

Perrault graduated from law school and practiced for 2 years before becoming a radio speaker and then turning entirely to cinema, filmmaking and writing. He made his film debut with Au Pays de Neufve-France , a series of 13 short documentaries for Canadian television. Between 1963 and 1996 he made 20 films.

Movie style

His film style is a form of documentary film known as direct cinema, which uses only a small amount of equipment and which aims to reproduce real situations in a realistic manner. Perrault was one of the most important filmmakers in Canada, although he was largely unknown beyond the borders of Québec. Nevertheless, his film style inspired later filmmakers such as Denis Villeneuve , who previously assisted Perrault during a film shoot at the North Pole and who later created films such as Sicario and Arrival .

Awards

In 1994 Perrault received the Prix Albert-Tessier. The films Pour la suite du monde (1963), Le règne du jour (1967), Les voitures d'eau (1968) make up his critically acclaimed trilogy L'Isle-aux-Coudres .

Film festivals

The 1963 film Pour la suite du monde with co-director Michel Brault was shown in the official competition at the  Cannes International Film Festival . His film La bête lumineuse (1982) was also shown at the 36th Cannes Film Festival . In 1984 he was part of the jury of the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival

recognition

The National Film Board of Canada writes about Perrault: 

“Pierre Perrault was a trailblazer and an inspiration; His immense work is unique in our cinema history: poetic, metaphorical and philosophical, his films are full of epic, larger-than-life characters and his themes are universal. "
