Rinus Bennaars

Marinus Apolonia "Rinus" Bennaars (born October 14, 1931 in Bergen op Zoom , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player . With Feijenoord Rotterdam he was twice Dutch champion; He was used 15 times in the national team.

Club career

After Bennaars had played at the club Nieuw-Borgvliet in his youth , he moved to the second division DOSKO Bergen , where he made his debut in the first team in 1950. From here he went to the first division club NOAD Tilburg in 1958 , where he scored ten goals in 28 games. Now Feijenoord became aware of the player and signed him. After seven goals in his first season, the right runner was a regular in the second season.

He stayed in Rotterdam for five years and became champions with the team in 1961 and 1962; since he brought the club through his goal on December 12, 1962 in the decider in the round of 16 of the European Cup against Vasas Budapest , which was played in the Bosuil Stadium in Deurne , in the next round, he has been called the "hero of Deurne". “That moment was the highlight of my sporting life,” he said later. He still keeps the football boots from that game in a display case , the mud from the field is still under the blue soles. In the quarter-finals that followed, Feijenoord eliminated another top club in Stade de Reims (with Raymond Kopa ), but in the semi-finals they lost to Benfica Lisbon .

In total, Bennaars scored six goals in 13 European appearances for Feyenoord. He made his last game for Rotterdam on June 13, 1964 in the Intertoto Cup against Hertha BSC . After a total of 132 missions with 42 goals, Feyenoord sold him for 25,000 guilders to the second division club Dordrechtse FC , where he was still active for two years and was champion of the 2nd division.

National team

Already on November 25, 1951, Bennaars made his debut in the Oranje -Elftal . In De Kuip 65,000 spectators saw a spectacular 6-7 defeat against Belgium , to which Bennaars contributed the goal to the 5-5 equalizer. In July 1952 he was part of the team that lost 5-1 in the Olympic Games in Brazil .

After ten games with two goals, Bennaar's international career was almost over, but in 1963 there was a comeback for him - after his success with Feijenoord; in the five other games, however, he remained without a hit. However, he was allowed to take part in the game, which is described by many as "his best international match": his team under bond coach Elek Schwartz won 1-0 against Brazil at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam , and Bennaars found himself in the unfamiliar role of man-kicking for Pelé , which could already be exchanged after half an hour. In Bennaar's last appearance in Orange, however, the team lost 2-1 to Luxembourg in the round of 16 of the 1964 European Championship in Rotterdam .
