Walter Balmer (born March 28, 1948 in Thun ; † December 27, 2010 in Interlaken ) was a Swiss football player .

Career

Balmer played youth football and started his active career at FC Thun in National League B under the player-coaches Mathias Rossbach and Heinz Schneiter . In 1968 he moved to FC Basel , where he played as a right winger for seven years under coach Helmut Benthaus . During this time he became Swiss champion four times . Between 1969 and 1973 Balmer played 20 games for the Swiss national football team , scoring a goal each in a 4-0 win against Turkey in 1971 and a 1-1 draw against Denmark in 1972 .

After completing his studies at the University of Basel , he ended his career at the age of 27 and worked as a math and physical education teacher at the Interlaken grammar school from 1975 until his death. Balmer died of heart failure in December 2010.
