Hans von Randow, tombstone in Hornburg

Hans von Randow (mentioned in a document 1559–1568; † 1572 ) was governor of Hornburg and Zilly .

Life

Hans von Randow was born at the beginning of the 16th century. The date and details of his youth have not survived. He soon made a career, however, and made it to the penitentiary Halberstadt official governor of Hornburg ( Wolfenbüttel district ) and Zilly ( Halberstadt district ).

The exact time of his appointment could not be determined, but he held his office as early as 1556. This year, in the church of St. Stephani des Hornburg, neighboring Osterwieck, his coat of arms was carved into the first pillar on the left in the nave with the inscription "HANS VON RANDAW HAVBTMAN ZU HORNBVRGK VND CILI WAPEN 1556". At that time he must have already been in office for a number of years and also have earned merit in it, because a newly appointed governor would hardly be given such an honor.

Hans von Randow officiated by and large inconspicuously. Controversial activities are not recorded in the files. His term of office fell during the heyday of the town of Hornburg, which at the time was very prosperous due to the hop growing and the favorable location at the crossroads of important trade routes . The heyday lasted only around 100 years, then the Thirty Years War ended .

In 1555 Hans von Randow married Ilsa von Werder , born in 1526 or 1527 , a daughter of the "learned Junkers and district administrator " Heidenreich (Heinrich) von Werder and Sophie v. Britzke. With Ilsa, Hans had four sons and at least two daughters: One of these daughters, Ilse, died in 1572 at the age of four. A tombstone was placed for her in the Marienkirche in Hornburg, which - like that of her father - is still preserved. His widow Ilsa donated the altar in the Hornburg church in 1617 , which still shows 16 ancestral coats of arms, eight each from her husband and her family: v. Randow , v. Knobloch , v. Werder , v. Retzow, v. Lochow , v. Behren , v. Lossow , v. Klitzing , v. Werder , v. Britzke , v. Stechow , v. Katte , v. Bardeleben , v. Wildenhag, v. Lindow and v. Beers .
