2nd Bundesliga 1976/77
The 2nd Bundesliga 1976/77 was played in two seasons of 20 clubs each. The two relay champions FC St. Pauli (North Staffel) and VfB Stuttgart (South Staffel) went straight to the Bundesliga . The TSV 1860 Munich prevailed in the relegation games against Arminia Bielefeld and followed as the third climber to the upper house.
Rot-Weiss Essen , Tennis Borussia Berlin (in the North relay) and Karlsruher SC (in the South relay) got out of the 1st Bundesliga and played in the second division the following season.
North
FC St. Pauli rose to the first Bundesliga as a relay championship, but only stayed there for one season. St. Pauli relegated Arminia from Bielefeld to second place, four points behind. The resulting relegation against the second of the season south, 1860 Munich, lost the Bielefeld, however, despite a 4-0 success in the first leg. Since the second leg was lost so high with 0: 4, a playoff had to determine the third promoted player. This won Munich 2-0 and Bielefeld remained in the second division until the promotion succeeded in the following season 1977/78 .
Relegated to the top leagues were next to last year's climber VfL Wolfsburg , the second division founding members Wacker 04 Berlin and Göttingen 05 and Bonner SC , which was not granted a license due to financial problems. The top scorer of the North season was Franz Gerber von St. Pauli with 27 goals. Walter Frosch from FC St. Pauli received a total of 18 or 19 yellow cards in 37 appearances (the exact number is not known). This was the trigger, which is why a few years later there was an automatic ban from one game after four (today five) yellow cards.

Promotion games to the 1st Bundesliga
Arminia Bielefeld won the first leg at home with 4-0 against TSV 1860 Munich and already looked like the sure climber. However, they lost the subsequent second leg just as clearly with 0: 4, so that a playoff had to decide on promotion. In this TSV 1860 Munich won 2-0 and rose to the Bundesliga.

Optimism of purpose or self-deception?
The decision seemed to have been made in favor of Bielefeld after the first leg due to the clear lead. Because as the Kicker-Sportmagazin wrote in its May 30th, 1977 issue, it was n't just the result ... it was above all the way in which Bielefeld went under in 1860. Munich coach Heinz Lucas sounded correspondingly resigned immediately after the game: I haven't seen my team that bad in the entire last season. All of my warnings have done nothing. We had already been promoted and underestimated the people of Bielefeld. In his game report for the kicker, Dieter Ueberjahn commented: Even at the break, the Bielefeld team would have been able to lead 3-0. ... After the change, the 60s went under completely. His conclusion ( only one more miracle can now bring the 60s into the Bundesliga ) and his outlook ( even the greatest optimists probably no longer believe in the promotion ) sounded less encouraging for the Munich team .
But those in charge of both clubs were by no means as sure of the matter as the sports journalists. Bielefeld's coach Feldkamp warned, despite the clear victory: We are not yet in the Bundesliga, we still have to go to Munich! Even for 1860 coach Lucas, the situation was not hopeless despite all the disappointment: When 70,000 stand behind us like one man next Saturday and the players find their true level of performance, there is still a ray of hope. 1860 President Erich Riedl also struck in the same direction : In football everything is possible and in 1860 a lot is impossible. This statement prompted the kicker commentator Gerhard Gmelch to ask the question, which was not entirely unjustified at the time: What should you call it? Optimism of purpose or even self-deception?

The terrible revenge in the Olympic Stadium
Kicker wrote the terrible revenge in the Olympic Stadium on June 6, 1977 on the report on the second leg in Munich and the commentator Hans Fiederer wrote at the beginning of his match report: Who still thought the "lions" humiliated in Bielefeld could do this exciting comeback? Even die-hard 60s supporters threw the gun in the grain: who can catch up 4-0 ...
But the "Münchner Löwen" began with an extremely determined and aggressive pressing , which put the Armines under massive pressure with the slightest attempt to set up the game. With their determination and the unconditional will to catch up on the seemingly hopeless deficit, the 1860s often exceeded the limits of what was permitted and later had to put up with serious accusations. So the Bielefeld found a suitable scapegoat in referee Redelfs; because he did not punish the “brutal football” that the lions created here , commented Norbert Herbst in kicker. And Werner Schilling quoted Munich goalkeeper Bernd Hartmann in the same issue, who admitted after the game that in 1860 he was ready to risk being sent off in the uncompromising fight for every chance.
The reactions from Bielefeld were correspondingly angry. For example, Arminia's managing director Hans Büttner said: If Mr. Biwersi had directed the games in Bielefeld and Munich, he would at least have issued an arrest warrant for bodily harm against Glavovic ! And in a letter to the DFB signed by all the DSC Arminia Bielefeld licensed players , the "scandalous style of play" of the sixties was denounced.

Peitsch's dismissal ensured the preliminary decision
After Munich had shown only a fraction of their capabilities in the first match and Bielefeld in the second leg, the decisive third game in the Frankfurt Waldstadion saw two equally strong teams, both of whom could be expected to advance. The turning point came in the 70th minute when Arminia's defender Roland Peitsch was sent off after a foul on Munich playmaker Georg Metzger. The kicker journalist Hans Fiederer commented on this game and promotion decisive scene as follows: “The iron-hard Bielefeld defender, who dictated the headline into the machine to a reporter too prematurely this week: I will slaughter butchers in Frankfurt. He "butchered" the tricky man from Munich in his own way, mowed him down, even though the situation did not demand it. If Peitsch had let “his” butcher run, the ball would have rolled over the sideline anyway and the game would have continued. ”Then the game broke and the 1860s played their numerical superiority to the limit.
