Career

Youth and beginnings in the senior sector, until 1974

The talent of striker Paul-Werner Hofmann developed in the youth department of TSG Oberbruch before he joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 1968. The light-footed, fast man on the left wing made his debut on March 1, 1970 in a qualifying game in Pilsen against Czechoslovakia in the youth national team of the DFB. He formed the left wing with half-forward Klaus Beverungen , the attack was completed by Lothar Skala , Uli Hoeneß and Rainer Bonhof . The Eintracht junior also played in the two other qualifying games against Yugoslavia in March. At the UEFA youth tournament in Scotland in May, however, Volker Graul stormed on the left wing. Hofmann was taken over into the club's professional squad for the 1970/71 season; externally, coach Erich Ribbeck's team was strengthened with Friedhelm Aust , Peter Reichel , Jürgen Papies and Thomas Rohrbach . When Ender Konca and Thomas Parits also enriched the Eintracht attack in his second year in the Bundesliga, 1971/72, the chances of playing for the slender striker (66 kg) were almost zero. After two years as a licensed player without a competitive game, he signed a new contract in the second-rate Regionalliga Südwest for the 1972/73 season with the promoted Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde.

Under coach Milan Nikolic , Eintracht Frankfurt's newcomer started with a 4-0 home defeat on August 6, 1972 with Eisbachtal against Wormatia Worms in the regional league. On the second match day, August 12, he underlined his importance for the fusion club from the greater Montabaur area in the Westerwald with his winning goal in the 77th minute of the 2-1 away win at Eintracht Trier. At the end of the round, the Sportfreunde took 14th place with 20:40 points and Hofmann made a decisive contribution with 13 hits. Due to the lack of placements in the crucial period of the last five years, Eisbachtal went back to the amateur camp after the next year, 1973/74. It wasn't enough for the team from the Westerwald to be nominated for the newly introduced 2. Bundesliga. Hofmann had scored 27 goals in 53 regional league appearances and signed a contract with SpVgg Fürth as a licensed player for the 2nd Bundesliga from the 1974/75 season.

Years in the 2nd Bundesliga, 1974 to 1981

He made his debut for Fürth on the 1st matchday of the 1974/75 season against FK Pirmasens . Under coach Alfred “Fred” Hoffmann and alongside teammates such as Peter Löwer (goalkeeper), Bernhard Bergmann , Erich Unger and Gerhard Bopp , the Ronhof-Elf finished 15th in the debut year of the new Bundesliga substructure. At Hofmann it had been enough to six goals in 35 missions. In his second year in Fürth, 1975/76, he increased his hit rate considerably: behind top scorer Karl-Heinz Granitza (Röchling Völklingen) with 29 goals, he and Ferdinand Keller (TSV Munich 1860) finished 2nd in the Goalscorer list of the 2nd league south. Under the new coach Hans Cieslarczyk , Fürth finished 10th with 37:39 points. The away weakness with 11:27 points prevented a better placement. The nachverpflichtete Lorenz Hilkes followed in Fürth scoring charts with seven goals in the second rank. Surprisingly, Hofmann signed a new contract with league rivals FSV Frankfurt for the 1976/77 season, which had occupied 13th place.

The Frankfurt team started the 1976/77 round from Bornheimer Hang on August 14, 1976 with a 2-3 home defeat against FC Augsburg. Hofmann scored both goals for the FSV. In the 3-1 home win on September 11, 1976 against 1. FC Nuremberg, Hofmann scored three goals for the team of coach Milovan Beljin . At the end of the round, the team around veteran Horst Trimhold finished 7th and Hofmann had scored 21 goals in 38 league appearances. The list of goalscorers in the southern league was led by Lothar Emmerich with 24 goals , ahead of Manfred Lenz and Werner Heck with 23 goals each, Ottmar Hitzfeld by master VfB Stuttgart with 22 goals, Hans Walitza and Paul-Werner Hofmann with 21 goals each. In the next four rounds, the FSV Frankfurt no longer came in the single-digit ranks, with the 15th place the FSV 1980/81 finished the chapter 2. Bundesliga. Hofmann had again scored 17 goals in 35 league appearances, the same number of hits as Werner Nickel and Peter Cestonaro . With the single-track 2. Bundesliga starting in 1981/82, FSV Frankfurt was relegated to the Hessian amateur league.

Hofmann moved to Eintracht Glas-Chemie Wirges for two years and then took over the position of player coach at his home club TSG Oberbruch from 1983.
