Gerhard Bopp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard "Bimbo" Bopp (born January 6, 1949 in Mainz ) is a former German football player .

The offensive player "Bimbo" Bopp is one of the greatest legends of 1. FSV Mainz 05 , for whom he scored 177 goals in 329 league and cup games in 12 seasons between 1967 and 1985. No other player in the Mainz club's history has recorded more hits.

biography

Bopp made his debut as an 18-year-old in the Mainz regional league team. He scored the first goal in his second mission. Apart from a five-week injury break, Bopp did not miss a single game of the 1967/68 season. 1970 Bopp left Mainz, but came to the stations SC Opel Rüsselsheim , TSV 1860 Munich , SSV Jahn Regensburg and SpVgg. Fürth returned to his home club during the 1975/76 winter break, which, apart from one season with the neighbor FVgg. Kastel 06 (1980/81) remained loyal to 1985. After three more positions at lower-class clubs in the greater Mainz area, Bopp ended his career in 1988.

Until mid-2015 he worked as a new car seller at a Mainz car dealership and is now retired. He plays football for an "old man's team" on the grounds of TV Mainz 1817 and for the "traditional team" of 1. FSV Mainz 05.

successes

Bopp had his most successful time around 1980. In 1977 and 1978 he was top scorer in the amateur league southwest with 29 and 39 goals respectively. From August 31 to October 2, 1977, Bopp managed at least one goal in eight consecutive games. In 1982 he became German amateur champion with the 05ers, 1978 champion of the Southwest Amateur League, 1980 and 1982 Southwest Cup winner.

Really a record scorer?

Due to the poor sources in the first 20 years of the Mainz club history, it cannot be said with certainty that Bopp is actually the record scorer of the 05er. The only competitor is Paul Lipponer , who scored 95 goals in 109 games from 1925 to 1931, but could have played up to 108 more games for Mainz from 1919. Should he, which is conceivable given his hit rate, have scored another 83 hits during this time, Lipponer would be ahead of Bopp.
