Lothar Skala (born May 2, 1952 in Groß-Gerau ; † September 28, 2008 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German soccer player who made 93 appearances and 3 goals in the Bundesliga between 1970 and 1979.

career

Lothar Skala grew up in the Groß-Gerau district of Dornheim (Hesse) and began playing football at his home club, SG Dornheim 1886 eV . As an A-youth, he moved to Offenbacher Kickers in 1969 and signed his first professional contract there in 1970 when he was 18. In the first season he came as an attacker on only seven missions and the team was relegated from the Bundesliga at the end of the season . Skala stayed with Offenbach and returned to the Bundesliga in 1972 as a central defender and regular player. In the 1972/1973 season he was in the starting line-up for all Offenbach games. The next few years were mainly characterized by injuries. After the renewed relegation of Kickers Offenbach in 1976, after a year in second class, Skala moved to competitor Eintracht Frankfurt , where he played until the 1978/79 season. It was only used 10 times for Frankfurt. Lothar Skala made a total of 93 Bundesliga appearances and scored 3 goals. In 1979 he was one of the first Germans to join the North American Soccer League (NASL) at Chicago Sting . He then had to end his football career because of irreparable damage to his knee joints.

National team

After moving to Kickers Offenbach in 1969, he was appointed to the youth national team. He participated in the 1970 UEFA youth tournament. In 8 games he scored 2 goals. In 1973, Skala played three times in the German U-23 national team . On April 25, 1975 in Offenbach, he completed a B international match against Finland's senior national team, which Germany won 6-0.

After the football career

In 1980 in Darmstadt, Skala opened the first Burger King branch in Germany run by a franchisee in Darmstadt, which was eventually expanded to six branches. He also worked as a FIFA-licensed player advisor. In his place of residence, he supported his homeland club, SG Dornheim, for many years both on a voluntary basis and as a sponsor. He died in September 2008 after a serious illness.
