Bernd Schmider (born May 3, 1955 in Wolfach ; † March 17, 2014 in Offenburg ) was a German football player and coach . The midfielder and attacking player completed a total of 121 Bundesliga games from 1977 to 1983 with the clubs VfB Stuttgart , 1. FC Nürnberg and Borussia Mönchengladbach and scored seven goals.

Career

The son of a restaurateur couple completed a commercial apprenticeship at a furniture store. He began his football career at FC Wolfach . When Alfred Metzler moved from FC 08 Villingen to Offenburger FV in 1973 , he took Bernd Schmider, four years his junior, with him to a trial training session. This impressed coach Hans Cieslarczyk so much that he also got a contract with OFV. With the club Schmider won the championship of the 1st Amateur League South Baden twice in 1974 and 1975. In the promotion round games for the 2nd Bundesliga in 1975 he could not participate due to injury.

1975 took place in Baden-Baden a game of the South Baden selection against the German national team. In addition to Alfred Metzler, Bernd Schmider also played for the Südbadener and caught the eye of the new coach István Sztani of VfB Stuttgart , who had been relegated from the Bundesliga and signed the fast midfielder from Offenburg for the 1975/76 season. In addition to the coach, the other newcomers Ottmar Hitzfeld , Dragan Holcer , Dieter Hoeneß and René Deck also came to the “Reds” in Stuttgart. The 20-year-old made his debut on September 21, 1975 in the away game against SpVgg Bayreuth in the 2nd Bundesliga. He was substituted on for Dieter Brenninger . In his first year as a professional, Schmider made 25 league appearances and scored two goals. The VfB played a disappointing round as a team and came in 11th place; Coach Sztani was replaced by Karl Bögelein at the end of March 1976 .

After the club was financially forced to rely more on young players such as Hansi Müller , Karlheinz Förster , Klaus-Dieter Jank , Markus Elmer and Harald Beck from the second season in the 2nd Bundesliga, 1976/77 , and Jürgen Sundermann, a man for was obliged to rebuild as a trainer, the enthusiastic and technically skilled Schmider was part of the enthusiastic championship round, where the promotion was achieved with offensive and passion, with 36 appearances and five goals to the permanent staff of the "miracle men".

The Bundesliga debut took place on August 6, 1977 in front of 71,000 spectators in the Neckar Stadium in a 3-3 home draw against FC Bayern Munich. Mainly for the offensive of the VfB-Elf were Hermann Ohlicher , Hans Müller, Bernd Schmider, Dieter Hoeneß and Ottmar Hitzfeld. The other games at the beginning of the first half of the season resulted in a negative score of 3: 9 points after six match days, so coach Sundermann made changes. In midfield, he increasingly relied on Erwin Hadewicz and in attack on Walter Kelsch . The losers in the promotion team were Klaus-Dieter Jank and Bernd Schmider. After he was only used in 12 games (1 goal) in the season after the resurgence in 1977/78, he moved to 1. FC Nürnberg on loan . In 1978/79 he made 27 appearances (2 goals) at the “Club” alongside teammates like Bertram Beierlorzer and Norbert Eder , but he was relegated to the Bundesliga with the old master under coach Robert Gebhardt . He therefore returned to Stuttgart after only a year. Under Sundermann's successor Lothar Buchmann , VfB finished third on points and goals with 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Schmider had played in 25 games (1 goal).

In 1980/81 he began the season at VfB Stuttgart under returnees Sundermann, before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach on loan after eight appearances (1 goal) in December 1980 , for which he played a total of 45 Bundesliga games (1 goal) and 13 European Cup games until 1983 Coach Jupp Heynckes was active. With the 6: 4 away win at Borussia Dortmund on June 4, 1983, Schmider said goodbye to Mönchengladbach and the Bundesliga. With Lothar Matthäus , Hans-Günter Bruns and Winfried Schäfer he had formed the midfield of the Bökelbergelf.

He returned for the 1983/84 season to South Baden for Offenburg FV in the amateur league of Baden-Württemberg , for which he played until 1987. He reached the runner-up with the OFV straight away and made it into the final in the competition for the German Amateur Championship . The final won Offenburg on 16 June 1984 as players Schmider, Wilfried Trenkel , Juergen Hartmann , Uli's brother, Alfred Metzler, Michael Hertwig , Ralf Todzi and Herbert the other with 4: 1 against the SC Eintracht Hamm . When things didn't go well in the second half of the following season 1984/85 for the Offenburg team, who were favored because of the championship title, Bernd Schmider took over the team's training until the end of the season.

Immediately after finishing his active career, Schmider was coach of the Offenburg FV a second time in the 1987/88 season . From March 2006 he was head of the youth department of the association and from autumn 2007 to January 2010 he was chairman of the sports / training department. Until 2012, Schmider was also a member of the association's supervisory board. In spring 2013 he completely withdrew from the club's activities. His main job was for the sporting goods manufacturer Nike, responsible for team sports in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Schmider died in March 2014 in his home in Zunsweier of a bilateral pulmonary embolism . He left a wife and two sons, both of whom were also active as football players: Felix (* 1988) at Offenburg FV and the lower class FV Rammersweier and Rico (* 1991) at Preußen Münster .
