Dragan Holcer (born January 19, 1945 in Zwiesel near Berggießhübel , German Empire ; † September 23, 2015 in Split , Croatia ) was a Yugoslav football player .
origin
Holcer's father was the Slovene Franc Holcer, his mother was the Niš- born Ida Orelli, daughter of an Austrian and an Italian railway engineer who was working on the construction of the Niš – Skopje railway at the time of his daughter's birth. Holcer's father fought in the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia during World War II and fell before Dragan's birth. His mother was captured in Slovenia and was imprisoned in Zwiesel with her three daughters. This is how Dragan Holcer was born in Saxony. After the war ended soon afterwards, the mother and her children moved to their homeland in Niš.
Athletic career
As a passionate handball player, Holcer came to soccer by chance: In Niš , youth players were wanted for the local soccer club Radnički , and although he only wanted to watch, he was accepted after an audition with just one other youth.
His professional career began in 1963/64 when he played for Radnički Niš for the first time in the first Yugoslav league, back then as a winger, while he was used as a defender for most of his career. After moving to Hajduk Split in 1967, he was three times Yugoslav champion and three times cup winner. After successfully surviving a protracted injury in the 1974/75 season , he moved to VfB Stuttgart in the 2nd Bundesliga , which was promoted to the Bundesliga in 1977 . After 106 Bundesliga games and one goal he played for Schalke 04 for another season in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1981/82 .
Between 1965 and 1974 Holcer was used 52 times in the Yugoslav national team, u. a. in the finals of the European Championship in 1968 .
