The FV 04 Würzburg (officially: 1. Würzburger Fußballverein 1904 eV ) was a soccer club in the Lower Franconian city of Würzburg .
history
The club was founded in 1904 as a workers' club and played an important role as the 1st Würzburger FV 04 (also known as FV 04 Würzburg ), especially in the 1920s in Lower Franconian football. For the 1927/28 season , the team rose to the top division at the time, the Bavarian District League, and immediately took fourth place in the northern group. The highlight of the season for the team around national defender Seppel Müller was a 4: 3 against the reigning German champions 1. FC Nürnberg .
When after the seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933 Gauligen were introduced as a new top flight, was one of the first WFV 04 of the founding members of the Gauliga Bayern , increased but there eleventh of twelve teams immediately into the second division. In the war years she managed to return to the Bavarian upper house twice.
After the war, the 1st Würzburg FV 04 played for many years in the top amateur class, the Amateur League Bavaria , but barely came out of the midfield. Nevertheless, from the beginning of the 1950s, after the first successful phase towards the end of the 1920s, the 1. WFV 04 consolidated its position as the second force in Würzburg football alongside local rivals Würzburger Kickers .
It was not until the 1970s that professional football in Würzburg experienced an upswing when 1. WFV 04 rose to the 2. Bundesliga in 1976 (and local rivals Würzburger Kickers did the same in the following year). The team was in the second division season 1977/78 one of six Franconian clubs in the second division south. Ultimately, the team, for which the former national player Lothar Emmerich also competed in this round , was unable to maintain its position permanently in the professional field and in 1980 was relegated to the amateur league.
In May 1981, the over-indebted club filed for bankruptcy, it was followed by the farewell to national football and as a result, the club was dissolved. The Würzburger FV was founded as the successor association . A short time later, you also had to leave the stadium on Frankfurter Strasse , which became the new home of the DJK Würzburg .
Venue
The club's venue was the stadium on Frankfurter Strasse in the Zellerau district .
