Waldshuter Chilbi
The Waldshut Chilbi is a traditional folk festival that is celebrated annually in August in Waldshut, today Waldshut-Tiengen .
history
The Waldshut Chilbi has been celebrated every year since 1468 in memory of the peace treaty after the Waldshut War .
The 5-day folk festival is held on the weekend after the Assumption of Mary, usually on the third weekend in August, by the 1468 Waldshut bachelors and their alumni , the 1468 Waldshut shooting club , the Alt Waldshut Association and the Waldshut Town Musicians .
The 1468 Waldshut Bachelors Association is one of the oldest guilds in Germany. The guild archive, newly established in 1976, is located in the Basel gate tower , the Lower Gate ; here are fine , statutes and Stubenrecht of 1698 in the guild charge stored.
In addition to the existing guilds of the master craftsmen , there were also those of the journeymen. In the so-called Baker dispute from Colmar (1495-1505) showed that the bachelor-guilds were able to assert their common goals. So also with the defense of the city in the Waldshut war . In 1468 the town of Waldshut was heavily bombarded and besieged by the Confederates , but only partially destroyed and could not be captured.
According to legend, the bachelors fattened the last ram after weeks of siege and led him around the city wall, which is said to have caused the Confederates to break off the siege. In another variant of the legend, the young journeymen even threw the goat over the wall into the federal camp in order to let them mockingly participate in the pretended abundance.
The siege came to its true end because of disagreements in the ranks of the Confederates. First of all, the storm on Waldshut was postponed from August 17th to 19th, as there was no agreement on whether it should take place at all. Since Zurich and the inner and eastern cantons were against the storm to the last, it was called off at the last minute. Negotiations in the meantime resulted in a peace treaty which was signed on August 27, 1468 in the parish church of Dogern.
The highlights of the festival are the home evening / citizens' theater , the large parade with over 1,000 participants and the raffle . For this purpose, the most beautiful ram (ram) is sought in advance, and is the only animal allowed to walk in the parade.
The Waldshuter Chilbi is visited by over 25,000 people every year.
