history

The Association of Bachelors 1468 Waldshut is one of the oldest guilds in Germany. The guild archive, newly established in 1976, is located in the Basel gate tower , the Lower Gate ; here are fine , statutes and Stubenrecht of 1698 in the guild charge stored.
The "Herrenstube" in the Gasthaus Zum Wilden Mann, decorated by Johann Christoph Feinlein, serves as the guild room.

The association disbanded several times briefly from 1813, but was always revitalized.

In addition to the existing guilds of the master craftsmen , there were also those of the journeymen. In the so-called Baker dispute of Colmar 1495-1505, it became clear that the bachelor-guilds were able to assert their common goals. So also with the defense of the city in the Waldshut war . In 1468 the town of Waldshut was heavily bombarded and besieged by the Confederates in the Waldshut War, but only partially destroyed and could not be captured.

According to legend, the bachelors fattened the last ram after weeks of siege and led him around the city wall, which is said to have caused the Confederates to break off the siege. This event is celebrated annually in August with the Waldshut Chilbi . There will also be a Bock baptism and the Bock auction . For this purpose, the most beautiful ram is searched for in advance and given a name.

In addition to the bachelor there are the former , because, of course, after a marriage of bachelors will be adopted.

In front of the Lower Gate in Waldshut, the “Stone Bachelor”, a sculpture by the German sculptor Guta von Freydorf-Stephanow , has stood since 1998 .
