Rudolf Thommen

Rudolf Thommen (born March 2, 1860 in Pettau , Duchy of Styria , Austrian Empire , today Ptuj, Slovenia ; † October 14, 1950 in Basel ; reformed ; resident in Basel) was a Swiss historian and diplomat .

life and work

Rudolf Thommen was a son of the railway engineer Achilles Thommen . He studied history at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In 1889 he completed his habilitation at the University of Basel , where he worked from 1897 as an associate professor and from 1915 to 1931 as a full professor of Swiss history and historical auxiliary sciences . His areas of expertise were palaeography , diplomacy and chronology as well as the history of the University of Basel. Together with Rudolf Wackernagel , he edited the eleven-volume document book of the city of Basel .
