Karl Friedrich Stehlin (born March 21, 1859 in Basel ; † November 18, 1934 there ) was a Swiss lawyer , politician , archaeologist and historian .

life and work

Karl Stehlin, son of the lawyer and politician Karl Rudolf Stehlin and brother of Hans Georg Stehlin and Fritz Stehlin , studied law at the universities of Basel , Leipzig and Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 1881. iur. PhD . After his habilitation in 1885, he worked until 1912 as a private lecturer in the law and history of Basel city law at the University of Basel. From 1884–1897 he was a member of the cantonal building experts commission, for which he drafted the Building Construction Act of 1895. 1892–1905 Stehlin took a seat as a representative of the liberal conservatives in the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt . 1897–1912 he was a member of the building police commission and 1897–1931 of the judiciary commission. 1895–1898 he chaired the Swiss Society for the Preservation of Art Monuments and, from 1896, its newly created sub-commission for research on the Roman era. From 1901 he was head of the Historical and Antiquarian Society in Basel.

As a private scholar, Stehlin made significant contributions to researching the past of the city of Basel and its surroundings. From 1880 he led excavations in Augusta Raurica and discovered, among other things, the oldest theater buildings as well as the main and south forums. Other researchers, namely Felix Staehelin and Rudolf Laur-Belart, profited considerably from the handwritten excavation reports . Stehlin made archaeological observations at other sites in the canton of Baselland and carried out the extensive excavations during the construction of the cemetery on the Hörnli in Riehen in the 1920s . As a historian and art historian, he carried out basic research in various fields. For example, he compiled a historical land register for the city of Basel, compiled a comprehensive bibliography on Augusta Raurica, researched the building history of the Basel cathedral, published articles on the building history of the minster in Freiburg in Breisgau, Strasbourg and Bern, and edited a collection of sources on early book printing in Basel and evaluated English archives for evidence of Swiss history.
