Karl Rudolf Stehlin

Karl Rudolf Stehlin (born January 13, 1831 in Basel ; † July 12, 1881 there ) was a Swiss business leader and politician .

Karl Rudolf Stehlin, son of the architect and politician Johann Jakob Stehlin studied law at the universities of Basel and Göttingen . On his doctorate to Dr. iur. Long stays abroad followed in 1852, for example in Berlin , Paris and England. From 1856–1872 he ran a law firm and a notary's office in Basel. From 1872–1881 he was chairman of the board of directors of the newly founded Basler Bankverein and he was also on the board of directors of several railway companies.

As a politician, Stehlin was considered a specialist in financial and transport issues. He sat on the Basel Grand Council from 1858–1881, which he chaired from 1866–1867. From 1875–1881 he represented the canton of Basel-Stadt in the Council of States and held the office of President of the Council of States in 1879/80.

In 1858 he published articles on Swiss history from English manuscripts together with Johann Jakob Bachofen in Zurich .

His brother was the architect Johann Jakob Stehlin the Younger , his sons the architect Fritz Stehlin , the archaeologist and historian Karl Stehlin and the paleontologist Hans Georg Stehlin .
