Tom Guarna

Tom Guarna (* around 1970 in Brooklyn ) is an American modern jazz musician ( guitar , composition ) .

Guarna began taking guitar lessons at the age of fifteen. After studying classical guitar and composition at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in 1986, he played his first concerts in New York and refined his training with John Abercrombie . In 2008 he earned a bachelor's degree from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and in 2010 a master's degree from the Juilliard School .

In 1991 Guarna began working with saxophonist and bestselling author James McBride , whose band members included drummer Gene Jackson and bassist Tracy Wormworth. In 1995 he became a member of Blood, Sweat & Tears and toured with the group for the next three years. Since then he has worked with Wallace Roney , Stanley Clarke , Mark Turner , Branford Marsalis , Randy Brecker , Lenny White , Mulgrew Miller , Billy Hart , Dr. Lonnie Smith , Gregory Hutchinson , Javon Jackson , Les McCann , Victor Bailey , Gary Bartz, and George Colligan . Guarna has recorded five albums under his own name on SteepleChase Records since 2003 , for which he also wrote compositions; also Rush (2014) on the label BJUR ( Brooklyn Jazz Underground Recordings). In the field of jazz he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1998 and 2016, including Manuel Valera's album New Cuban Express , which was nominated for a Grammy in 2013 .

Guarna has published articles in Jazz Improv magazine (2004) and Jazz Guitar Book (2012).
