Curt Newton

Curt Newton is an American jazz drummer.

Newton studied jazz performance at the New England Conservatory of Music and was a student of Bob Gullotti . Since 1986 he worked as a professional musician. With Ken Vandermark and Nate McBride he formed the group Tripleplay , with which he recorded three albums, another was created with Vandermark and Kent Kessler ( Steelwood Trio ).

Newton is currently a member of the Nate McBride Quartet (with Charlie Kohlhase and Taylor Ho Bynum ), the trio mi3 (with Pandelis Karayorgis and Nate McBride ) and the Trio Ex Nihilo (with Jeff Song and Taylor Ho Bynum). He recorded an album with the group The Poppies . As a sideman he also worked with Hans Poppel , Joe Morris , James Rohr , Greg Kelley and Jorrit Dijkstra .

In addition, Newton distinguished himself as a solo percussionist. In 1992 he played a percussion concert with Alan Dawson and Bob Gullotti , in 1996 the world premiere of John Zorn's Hwang Chin Ee for two percussionists and narrator and in 1997 a transcription of Witold Lutosławski's string quartet for solo drums . In 2002 he worked on Chen Zhen's multimedia sculpture Jue Chang at the Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art .
