Niyozali Kholmatov (August 2010)

Niyozali Kholmatov (Uzbek Xolmatov , also Holmatov , Russian Ниёзали Холматов ; born February 20, 1947 in Koshtepa, Ferghanatal , Uzbek SSR , † March 19, 2020 in Tashkent ) was an Uzbek miniature artist . He lived and worked in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Life

Niyozali Kholmatov received his education from 1954 to 1965 at boarding school No. 1 in Andijon . As a schoolboy, he already led a painting and drawing group for his classmates.

In 1965 he began studying architecture at the University of Engineering and Landscape Management in Moscow , but this did not quite match his artistic inclinations. Therefore, in the same year, he switched to the art school "MI Kalinin" - Faculty of Art Painting, to study painting with a focus on icon painting . While still a student, he completed several internships in the famous centers for Russian lacquer and enamel miniature painting ( Palech , Mstera and Rostower Finift ). Here he learned the peculiarities of the technology, specification of the material, preparation and manufacturing stages. Kholmatov successfully completed his studies in 1973 with a diploma. His diploma thesis was designed in the style of an oriental miniature . Since then, his life and creative path has been inextricably linked with oriental miniature art.

From 1973 to 1980 he worked in the experimental workshop of the art factory for engraving in Moscow.

In 1980 Niyozali Kholmatov was invited to Tashkent by the Uzbek government and the artists' association and commissioned to revive Uzbek lacquer miniature painting. In 1981 he founded an experimental workshop in Tashkent, where he taught the technology of paper mache production and miniature painting.

Around 1984 Niyozali Kholmatov was looking for new ways of expressing traditional miniature painting. He found them in decorative panel paintings , in miniature painting on enamel, and finally on paper. In the same years he succeeded in synthesizing goldsmithing and miniature painting. For these innovations in the field of miniature art he was awarded by UNESCO in 1995.

In 1990 Niyozali Kholmatov took part in a pilot project “Cultural exchange between the artisans of the Uzbek and Lower Saxony ministries of culture ”. Since 1997 he has been a full member of the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan and secretary of the Department of Applied Art and Miniature Painting.

Since 1999 he has been teaching the subjects of composition and technology of miniature painting at the chair for book graphics and miniature painting at the Academy for Art and Design in Tashkent. In 2000 he was awarded the title of "Honored Artist of the People of the Republic of Uzbekistan".

Niyozali Kholmatov is an artist whose artistic handwriting should not be confused with that of other Uzbek artists. It is probably not only due to his style, but also to the worldview and the philosophical principles of his work. Whereby behind its versatility - lacquer miniature, goldsmith's art , monumental frescoes , book illustrations , panel paintings - a wholeness, richness of content and his special attitude towards historical traditions can be recognized.

At the beginning of his creative period around 1984, Niyozali Kholmatov was looking for new ways of expressing traditional miniature painting. He finds them in large-scale wall painting and decorative panel paintings, in miniature painting on enamel, and finally on paper. In order to transfer miniature painting to these new media, he has worked out the respective working method from scratch. With the wall paintings, Kholmatov was faced with the task of acquiring the technique of fresco painting and at the same time finding a way to transfer the characteristics of miniature painting , its two-dimensionality , decorativeness and coloring to large surfaces. Deliberately subtle colors, elegant, masterful lines , expressive and clear compositions are characteristic of this time. The murals in the building of the Uzbek silk industry association, in the theater in the city of Guliston , in the foyers of the Uzbek foreign ministry, the Turkish and Indian embassies, in the hotel “Bukhara” in Bukhara , in the concert palace “ Turkestan ” in Tashkent are particularly closed mention.

In the same years Kholmatov was looking for a synthesis of goldsmithing and miniature painting; he experiments a lot with the burning processes of enamel . Filigree silver boxes with enamel painting are created, the motifs of which are very poetic and delicate: "Nightingale and Rose", "The Garnet Blossom", "The Night", "The Musician".

In his goldsmith's work, too, he succeeds in amalgamating the oriental tradition with modern European goldsmithing. In the elegant and delicate pieces of jewelry from this period, he uses the complicated system of the geometric "girich" ornament . For brooches series, it can be from the Ikat inspired -patterns the Uzbek silk fabrics.

In the early 1990s, Niyozali Kholmatov began to work with miniatures on paper; here too he is looking for new ways of expressing himself. He discovered the regularities in the structure of the classic oriental miniature and delved into the world of oriental philosophy . He tries to grasp the experiences of Sufism both emotionally and pragmatically. The idea of a constant path to perfection, to harmony with the world fascinates him and is evident in the subjects of his pictures, which are to be interpreted symbolically and metaphorically . The most important works include “The Sea of Life”, “ Sufi Metamorphoses ”, “The Shah , the Beloved and the Dervish ”, “Sacrifice of Desire”, “The Traveler”. In some works he also deals with themes from classical Persian, Indian and Arabic poetry, such as: As in his miniature series to the Persian national epic " Shahnameh " or to life Babur .

Since 2002 he has been working on a topic that interested him as an artist: illustrating the stories and legends of the Old Testament . His interest is based on the fact that the three great world religions Christianity , Islam and Judaism have a common root. His own interpretation and artistic implementation of the Old Testament stories is independent of a close religious affiliation, but is based on his knowledge of the regional culture and the lifestyle of the time. The people and stories about Abraham , Solomon , Noah , Moses and Joseph are impressively staged in his unmistakable style. In addition, he is now concerned with the free interpretation of miniature painting, with the poetry of oriental art and its most important principle, ornamentation .
