Peter F. Flaherty

Peter "Pete" Francis Flaherty (* 25. June 1924 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ; † 18th April 2005 in Mount Lebanon , Pennsylvania) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and a lawyer who not only mayor of Pittsburgh, but a short time was also Deputy US Attorney General . Flaherty also applied twice unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate and one more time for the office of governor of Pennsylvania.

Life

Flaherty, who did his military service in the US Army during World War II , first attended Carlow University before studying law at the Law School of the University of Notre Dame , which he graduated in 1951. After his subsequent license to practice as a lawyer in the state of Pennsylvania, he practiced as a lawyer and from 1957 to 1964 as the deputy district attorney for Allegheny County .

His political career in the Democratic Party, he began in 1966 when he was appointed member of the City Council was selected by Pittsburgh and this belonged to the 1970th In 1970 he was elected mayor of Pittsburgh . During his tenure, which lasted until 1977, he also completed postgraduate studies in public administration at the University of Pittsburgh , which he completed in 1971 with a Master of Public Administration (MPA).

In 1974 he ran for the Democrats for the first time for a Senate seat for Pennsylvania , but was defeated by the Republican incumbent Richard Schweiker with 45.9 percent of the vote to 53 percent.

After Jimmy Carter was elected US President , he joined the government in 1977 as US Deputy Attorney General and was Deputy Attorney General in this capacity until 1978. In 1978 he resigned from this office to run for the Democrats to succeed Milton Shapp for the office of governor of Pennsylvania . In the election, however, he was defeated by the Republican candidate Dick Thornburgh .

In 1980 he ran again for the second Senate seat of Pennsylvania ( Class 3 ), but lost again to his Republican opponent, this time to former District Attorney Arlen Specter , who got 50.48 percent, while Flaherty received 48.04 percent of the vote.

After some time back as a lawyer, he was most recently Commissioner of Allegheny County between 1984 and 1996 and thus head of administration.
