Charles Byron Renfrew

Charles Byron Renfrew (born October 31, 1928 in Detroit , Michigan , † December 14, 2017 ) was an American lawyer , judge and business manager who was also the US Deputy Attorney General .

Life

After attending school, Renfrew did his military service in the US Navy from 1946 to 1948 , before studying at Princeton University , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1952 . After he returned to active military service during the Korean War in the US Army , he studied law at the University of Michigan Law School from 1953 to 1956 , completing this degree with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).

After his subsequent lawyer's admission he was 1956 first Staff Attorney in the law firm Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro , before he had this firm from 1965 to 1972 partners. He was then a judge on the US District Court for the Northern District of California from 1972 and 1980 .

In 1980, Renfrew, who was a member of the Democratic Party, was appointed US Deputy Attorney General and thus Deputy Minister of Justice in the administration of US President Jimmy Carter .

After Carter's tenure ended, he returned to Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro as a partner in 1981 and was then a member of the board of directors and vice president of legal affairs at the oil company Chevron Corporation from 1983 to 1993 . After leaving Chevron, he was most recently a partner at LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae , a law firm with 700 attorneys today and based in New York City, from 1993 to 1997 .

Volunteering

Renfrew has also served in legal organizations such as the American Bar Association , American Bar Foundation, American Judicature Society, American Law Institute , Association of General Counsel, Bar Association of San Francisco, Southwestern Legal Foundation, and Supreme Court Historical Society, and was also President of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Chairman of the International Institute for Conflict Resolution and Prevention and Member of the Board of Directors of the National Center for State Courts.

In addition, Renfrew, who was also a member of the Order of the Coif and Phi Beta Kappa, was also chairman of the main legal committee of the American Petroleum Institute and from 1974 to 1991 a member of the Board of Governors of the San Francisco Symphony and thereafter between 1991 and 1996 Trustee of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art . In 1982 he also worked for the Council on Foreign Relations .
