Delwen Lowell Jensen (born June 3, 1928 in Brigham City , Utah ) is a retired American attorney , prosecutor, and judge , who was also the US deputy attorney general .

Life

After attending school, Jensen first studied at the University of California at Berkeley , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1949 . He then studied at the Law School , Boalt Hall, Law and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Laws from (LL.B.). He then did his military service in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 and was finally promoted to corporal .

After he had been admitted to the bar in the state of California in 1953 , he initially practiced as a lawyer after completing his military service, before he was Deputy District Attorney of Alameda County ( Deputy District Attorney or Assistant District Attorney ) between 1955 and 1969 . Afterwards he was a district attorney for Alameda County from 1969 to 1980. During that time he also served on the Board of Directors of the California Crime Technological Research Foundation from 1970 to 1974 and President of the California District Attorneys Association from 1979 to 1980 .

After completing his work as a district attorney, he was United States Assistant Attorney General in 1980 and was as such until 1983 head of the Department of Criminal Law ( Criminal Division ) in the US Department of Justice . He was then first from 1983 to 1985 as the successor to Rudy Giuliani Associate Attorney General , before he was Deputy Attorney General until 1986 as Deputy Attorney General .

In June 1986, Jensen was appointed to succeed William Horsley Orrick as a judge at the federal district court for the northern district of California and held that judge's office until he moved to senior status in June 1997.
