Lawrence Edward Walsh (born January 8, 1912 in Port Maitland , Nova Scotia , Canada - † March 19, 2014 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) was an American lawyer and United States Deputy Attorney General who served primarily as an independent prosecutor in the Iran-Contra affair became known.

Life

After attending school, he studied at Columbia University , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (AB) in 1932 , before completing a degree in law at the local law school with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). After his admission to the bar, he practiced as a lawyer in New York City . Having 1954-1957 as a judge at the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York had acted, he was in 1957 as Deputy Attorney General Deputy US Attorney General and held this post until the 1960th

After retiring from government service, in 1961 he became a partner in Davis Polk & Wardwell , a New York City law firm that now has 600 attorneys. During his local 20-year partnership until 1981, he was from 1966 to 1967 also president of the Bar Association of the State of New York (New York State Bar Association) . He then became a partner in the law firm Crowe & Dunlevy in Oklahoma City in 1981 and was also involved in the American Bar Association , the American Judicature Society , the American Law Institute and as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers . In addition, he was at times trustee of his alma mater , Columbia University.

Walsh achieved great fame through his work as an investigator and independent prosecutor of the Iran-Contra affair between December 1986 and 1993. In 1997 he wrote the book Firewall: The Iran-Contra Conspiracy and Cover-Up about these experiences and backgrounds . In addition, his memoirs appeared under the title The Gift of Insecurity: A Lawyer's Life in 2003 and an article on the Iran-Contra affair in the Counterpunch newsletter .
