Mark Filip (born June 1, 1966 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American attorney , prosecutor, and judge , who was also temporarily deputy US attorney general .

Life

After attending Maine South High School in Park Ridge , he first studied economics and history at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics and History) in 1988 . He then completed a law degree at Oxford University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He then continued his law studies at the Law School of Harvard University , where he received a Juris Doctor (JD) in 1992 . During his studies there, he not only joined the Phi Kappa Psi academic association, but was also a member of the editorial staff of the Harvard Law Review .

After completing his studies, he was the law clerk of Judge Stephen F. Williams and then of Antonin Scalia , who has been a judge at the Supreme Court of the United States since 1986 . From 1995 to 1999, he was first deputy US attorney for the northern district of Illinois, based in Chicago , before becoming a partner at Skadden, Arps , a law firm with 1,800 attorneys today and based in New York City, between 1999 and 2004 .

Filip then became a judge at the US District Court responsible for the northern district of Illinois , where he succeeded Harry Daniel Leinenweber , who had changed to senior status, from February 2004 to March 2008.

On March 10, 2008, he became US Deputy Attorney General and deputy attorney general in the administration of US President George W. Bush and held this position until 2009. Most recently, after the election of Barack Obama as US President, he was in this position from 20 January to the inauguration of Eric Holder on March 3, 2009 Acting US Attorney General .

After leaving government, Filip became a partner at Kirkland & Ellis , a law firm with more than 1,500 attorneys and nine offices worldwide, one of the largest commercial law firms.
