Matthew Whitaker (2018)

Matthew "Matt" George Whitaker (born October 29, 1969 in Des Moines , Iowa ) is an American lawyer . From November 7, 2018 to February 14, 2019, he succeeded Jeff Sessions as Executive United States Attorney General .

Career

Whitaker graduated from Ankeny High School in Ankeny, Iowa . He then completed a bachelor's degree in communications at the University of Iowa , where he also played football . He played a total of 33 games as a tight end for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes from 1990 to 1992 . Upon graduation, Whitaker studied at the University of Iowa Law School . Whitaker is a member of the Republican Party and is considered a loyal supporter of US President Donald Trump .

On June 15, 2004, President George W. Bush named Whitaker a US Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa. The appointment followed the recommendation of Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley , despite Whitaker's lack of legal qualifications.

From 2014, Whitaker headed the non-profit Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT). In the same year he ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate . He lost in the primary to Republican Joni Ernst . Whitaker received only 7.54% of the vote. Whitaker sat on the board of directors of World Patent Marketing , which went bankrupt in 2017 and was fined $ 25 million by a Florida court for cheating investors with false promises.

On November 7th, Whitaker was appointed executive (interim) successor to Jeff Sessions by Trump. Whitaker previously served as Jeff Sessions Chief of Staff as of September 22, 2017. In his executive role, Whitaker can be in office for a maximum of 210 days. By then, at the latest, he must either leave office or be appointed permanent attorney general by Trump and be confirmed by a majority in the US Senate.

Matt McCoy , a senator from Iowa, said on Whitaker's appeal that he "couldn't think of a less qualified candidate for the office." Overall, Whitaker's appeal is viewed very critically by the majority of Democratic members of Congress and most of the media in the United States, as Whitaker has in the past been extremely critical of the ongoing investigation into Special Counsel Robert Mueller . With his appointment as United States Attorney General, Whitaker was effectively Mueller's superior and overseeing Mueller's entire investigation team.

There were demonstrations across the country against Sessions' sacking and Whitaker's appeal. The state of Maryland and three US Democratic Senators ( Richard Blumenthal , Sheldon Whitehouse and Mazie Hirono ) have filed lawsuits against Whitaker's appeal for alleging unconstitutional.
