Mueller is of German , English and Scottish descent. His paternal great-grandfather , Gustave A. Mueller, was a prominent physician in Pittsburgh whose own father had immigrated to the United States from the then Prussian province of Pomerania .
Mueller grew up in Princeton, New Jersey , where he attended Princeton Country Day School, now known as Princeton Day School . After he completed eighth grade , his family moved to Philadelphia . There he was extremely successful in school sports . Mueller celebrated some successes especially in lacrosse and got to know the former US Secretary of State John Kerry as a teammate.
Training and first stations in the military and justice
Robert Mueller studied at Princeton University , where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. A year later, he received another degree (Master of Arts (International Relations)) from New York University . He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1973 with a degree in law with a professional doctorate ( Juris Doctor ).
In August 1967, he began military training at the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School at Marine Corps Base Quantico . After graduation, he served in the Vietnam War as an officer, initially as a platoon leader in the 4th Regiment of the 3rd US Marine Division of the United States Marine Corps . After being wounded in April 1969, he became an adjutant to General William K. Jones . Mueller was awarded the Bronze Star , two Navy Commendation Medals , the Purple Heart and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry . In August 1970 he retired from active service with the rank of captain .
Mueller later served as assistant to the Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and was involved in the prosecution of the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega and the mobster John Gottis . In 1988, Mueller was appointed chief investigator of the Lockerbie bombing (Pan-Am flight 103). He was the head of the government investigation into the Mafia CIA money laundering bank BCCI and the FBI investigation into the crimes of September 11, 2001 .
From 1999 to 2001 he served as the federal attorney for the Northern District of California; he was succeeded by Kevin V. Ryan .
FBI Director (2001-2013)
President George W. Bush named Mueller director of the FBI, and the United States Senate unanimously approved him with 98 votes against (no two Senators, Pete Domenici and Daniel Inouye , were present). Mueller was FBI director from September 4, 2001 through September 4, 2013. At 12 years in office, he is the second longest-serving FBI director after J. Edgar Hoover , who held the office for 48 years. He was replaced by James B. Comey on September 4, 2013 during the second term of US President Obama .
Special Investigator (2017-2019)
On May 17, 2017, Mueller was appointed special investigator to clarify potential entanglements between US President Donald Trump and Russia . Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein after Attorney General Jeff Sessions stayed out of the investigation because of possible bias ("recusal"). The Washington Post reported on June 15, 2017 that Mueller had expanded his investigation to include President Trump. It is about the allegation of obstruction of justice ("obstruction of justice"). These investigations began after the dismissal of FBI director James B. Comey on May 9, 2017. According to a January 25, 2018 report in the New York Times , Trump wanted to fire Mueller in June 2017. A threat to resign from White House legal advisor Don McGahn averted this.
In February 2018, Mueller or the grand jury filed indictments against 13 Russians, including Yevgeny Prigozhin , for conspiracy to disrupt democratic processes in the United States, including the 2016 presidential election . The Russian group "Konkord" founded by Prigozhin and several front companies belonging to the so-called " Agency for Internet Research " are also mentioned.
On March 22, 2019, Mueller submitted his final report to Attorney General William Barr .
