William S. Sessions
William Steele Sessions (born May 27, 1930 in Fort Smith , Arkansas , † June 12, 2020 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American lawyer and director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from November 1987 to July 1993 .
biography
After attending Northeast High School in Kansas City , he began studying at Baylor University in Waco in 1948 . In 1952 he interrupted his studies and did his military service in the US Air Force . He then continued his studies in 1955 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1956 . He completed a subsequent postgraduate study of law at Baylor University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).
After being admitted to the bar , he worked as a lawyer for several years before becoming a federal prosecutor between 1971 and 1974 . He then served as a judge in the federal district court for the western district of Texas between December 1974 and November 1987 . Most recently he was also President ( Chief Judge ) of this Federal District Court from 1980 to 1987 .
On November 2, 1987, William S. Sessions was appointed director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). On July 19, 1993, he became the first FBI chief in history to be fired by then US President Bill Clinton . Apart from him, this only happened to James B. Comey in the history of the FBI , whom US President Donald Trump dismissed on May 9, 2017.
After his retirement from government service, he joined the private sector and became a member of the board of directors of Zenith National Insurance , an insurance company with a balance sheet total of 1.3 billion dollars and is based in Woodland Hills .
William Sessions was married to Alice Lewis from 1952 until her death in 2019. Together they had four children, three sons and a daughter. His second oldest son, Pete Sessions, was a Texas Congressman from 1997 to 2019 .
