The Bogen railway bridge crosses the single- track Straubing – Bogen line near the town of Bogen at kilometer 2311.27 over the Danube and its oxbow lake .

history

It was built as part of the former Straubing – Miltach railway line and put into operation on December 9, 1895 as part of the opening of rail traffic between Straubing and Bogen. On April 16, 1945, bombing made it impassable and on April 26, 1945 it was blown up. In the summer of 1945, work began on rebuilding the bridge. After completion in June 1946, the new service began on July 1, 1946. 60 years later, the poor condition of the bridge required extensive repair work. For this purpose, the bridge was closed to rail traffic from February 16, 2006 to August 7, 2006. Since then, the bridge has been used again by railcars of the Gäubodenbahn. Heavy locomotives, however, are not permitted. Since that time, the steam train, which previously made special trips between Bogen and Straubing at the Bogen station festival, has also been banned.

A routine load-bearing study was carried out in 2016. Due to their condition and the too low headroom, a new building or demolition without replacement in the course of the Danube expansion is under discussion. The latter is opposed, however, by the obligation of the infrastructure operator, DB Netz , to keep the Straubing - Bogen railway line operational until at least December 2024. Until at least this point in time, the order for local trains by the Bavarian Railway Company means that there will be traffic over the bridge. A suspension of the rail connection to Bogen would have serious consequences for commuters and schoolchildren, the latter come to Bogen from the entire district of Straubing-Bogen, as some of the few secondary schools are there.

A maximum speed of 40 km / h applies in both directions on the bridge. It is equipped with lighting devices and radar reflectors to warn ships on the Danube of the low headroom.

It happens again and again that ships collide with the bridge, mostly when the water level is high. The last accident occurred on January 22, 2018, when a Romanian cargo ship with the driver's cab got stuck on the bridge because the captain had not lowered it, as the reduced draft would have required after unloading in the Straubing-Sand port a few hundred meters away . However, only one radar reflector was damaged on the bridge; it was not necessary to block the bridge.

construction

With all flood bridges together, the bridge consists of 20 bridge fields and has a total length of 547 meters.
The river bridge over the Danube is made up of three fields as a parallel- belted steel truss bridge with a single-lane carriageway through the girders. At 60 meters, the middle field has a greater span than the two adjacent fields. The 60 m field also provides passage for shipping, both for uphill and downhill journeys, with a passage width of 43.95 meters and a current passage height of 5.0 meters based on HSW, due to the 320, 07  m above sea level Lower construction edge of the bridge lying above sea level . Due to planned river engineering measures, the clearance height is to change to 4.72 meters. The southern approach bridge is a steel girder bridge with two fields. In the northern foreland bridge, consisting of twelve steel beam fields, the bridge over the oxbow river is still integrated in the middle, which consists of a steel truss girder bridge with three fields.
In order to achieve a sufficient headroom for shipping traffic, access ramps were built on both banks. The southern ramp, which begins after the Sand stop, is clearly visible . The southern part of the entire bridge, including the river bridge, is located in the area of the municipality of Aiterhofen . The northern section is in the area of the city of Bogen.
