Christopher Asher Wray (born December 17, 1966 in New York City ) is an American lawyer and government official. He has been the director of the FBI since August 2, 2017 .

Wray studied law at Yale University until 1992 . In 1997 he began his career as an Assistant United States Attorney at a Georgia District Court . In 2001 he moved to the United States Department of Justice ; from 2003 to 2005 he headed in the ministry of George W. Bush appointed as Assistant Attorney General , the Department of Crime (Criminal Division) , working under James Comey . He resigned in 2005 and then worked for the law firm King & Spalding until 2017.

On June 7, 2017, US President Donald Trump nominated him to succeed the sacked FBI Director James B. Comey . On August 1, 2017, Wray was confirmed as such by the Senate with 92 to 5 votes and sworn in the next day. At the public rerun of his swearing-in on September 28th of that year, Trump was the first president in American history to be absent, as the FBI is investigating his possible links to Russia ; the same uniqueness applies to Wray's distant predecessors Robert Mueller and Comey.
