Toponymy

The first mention of it goes back to the year 1059 when Briana was mentioned. Since Brienne is located on a Roman road , it is assumed that the place name goes back to the Gallic word briva for bridge, which together with the Latin suffix -ana for an area designation led to briv-ana and briana . The name therefore means at the bridge (over the Seille).

history

The Roman road between Tournus and Louhans passed Brienne. The monks of Tournus founded a Benedictine priory in Le Château in 1059 (south of the village, now Rue de Vallière, 100 meters from the D975), which was abandoned in 1365.

The origins of the Church of Brienne date back to the 12th century, but the current church was not consecrated to Saint Mary Magdalene until 1443 . In 1884 the church was restored and enlarged. With the revolution , Brienne was assigned to Cuisery for worship , and the rectory was confiscated and sold. Not until 1856 was a separate pastor appointed again. The church originally had a bell tower that should have been renovated. Since not enough money could be collected for the renovation at the end of the 19th century, it was demolished. In 1994 a total renovation was carried out because the building had suffered badly from the vibrations from the main road and was in danger of collapsing.

After the Battle of Waterloo , Brienne experienced difficult times, the population had to feed 9,000 Austrians who had set up their camp in Brienne. Between 1905 and 1940 the community prospered, numerous craftsmen and merchants had settled down, Brienne had a train station on the Tournus - Louhans line from 1906 , which was beneficial to the economy. At the end of the 19th century a lock was built in the Seille , which was demolished in 2006. During the Second World War, the bridge over the Seille was destroyed by German troops and for several years the river could only be crossed by ferry. In 1838 there was a mill, a brick factory and a horse mail station, and wine was also grown. The current rectory was built in 1856, the boys 'school (today the community hall) in 1868 and the girls' school (today's school building) in 1886. In 1988 there were 11 farms.

heraldry

The municipality uses a coat of arms based on that of Raoul I. de Brienne . The only difference is that the community shows only the front part of the rising lion, while Raoul de Brienne shows the whole lion. Incidentally, the de Brienne family has nothing to do with the municipality of Brienne in the Saône-et-Loire department , except for the name Brienne . The de Brienne family came from Brienne-le-Château in Champagne-Ardenne .
