Toponymy

It was first mentioned in 981 when Capella Sancti-Mauricii in villa Gevencion was mentioned. It is believed that the area was settled in Gallo-Roman times and belonged to a Gevencius . This early settlement is confirmed by archaeological finds, in 1978 the remains of a house from the 3rd century were found, the floor plan of which was two by five meters.

history

Remains of a Roman settlement were found near les Pérouses , the Saint Mauritius Chapel is described as lying with a moth in a loop of the Seille . In 981 Henri , Duke of Burgundy bequeathed the church of Huilly to the Tournus monastery , but reserved the usufruct. He received the chapel of Jouvençon, which was near his castle, but on the opposite side of the Seille . In the 15th century the castle was destroyed and the residents of Jouvençon took possession of the chapel, which became the village church, but only as a branch church of Brienne . In 1755 there was a dispute, the church had collapsed and the cost of rebuilding was 2,222 livres . Layer residents were supposed to pay 613 livres but only wanted to contribute 520 livres . In 1838 the Conseil municipal feared that the church would collapse again due to ground movements. In addition, it had become too small and a piece of land was purchased in the center of the village and a new church with a rectory was built. For the new church, material was used from the old chapel, of which only the choir remained, and which became a small place of pilgrimage. At the end of the 19th century, the teacher reported that old customs still existed, such as the rat festival between Christmas and New Year or the fire festival on February 5th. On that day, a blessed box tree branch is burned in the washing trough to protect the house against fire. In 1988 there were still 11 farms.
