About this picture

The municipality is located in the Bresse landscape , slightly elevated above the Brenne , a right tributary of the Seille, and meets the Jura department in the southeast and south . It is shaped by the Brenne , which often causes floods and debris flows . It flows from Bellevesvre into the municipality, flows around the hill of Torpes north and then moves south, enriched by the two Ruisseaux in the municipality of Montjay . The Ruisseau des Armetières flows into the municipality from the west , serves the Étang de Neuillon , and then flows into the Brenne . The Ruisseau des Tenaudins flows from Mouthier-en-Bresse along the northern boundary of the municipality, leaves the municipality and flows further south through the municipality to flow into the Brenne . In the extreme east, La Darge finally flows through the municipality. In addition, the community has a large number of Biefs , artificial watercourses that serve to drain the cultivated areas. When it rains heavily, the plain between Torpes and Les Lorances is often under water and the road is sometimes impassable.

Only unimportant secondary roads open up to the municipality, the D23 département road comes from Bellevesvre into the municipality, touches the hamlets of Charnay and Le Portail , in order to finally reach Louhans via the Jura department . This road follows the route of the old Roman road that connected Louhans with Bellevesvre and Tavaux . The route was so cleverly laid out that the flood plain of Les Lorances was avoided.

The municipality is strongly characterized by agriculture, but has only very little forest areas. On the other hand, there are quite pronounced poplar plantations in the area of the Brenne floodplain in the north and south of the municipality.

The municipality is highly sprawled, only about 20% of the population live in the Bourg , the rest in the numerous hamlets. The following hamlets and corridors belong to the municipality: Baraques, Charnay, Cretey, Dombe, Duchault, Ecoley, Giroflée, Laurences, Mortier, Monnots, Moulin-des-Prés, Neuillon, Portail, Tenaudins, Utre, Vailliers .

Toponymy

It was first mentioned in the 12th century in the records of the Baume-les-Messieurs monastery , where Ecclesia de Torpa is mentioned and the existence of a church is documented. The name of the place seems to be of Celtic origin. Ernest Nègre traces the place name back to torp , in Langues d'oïl the term for taupe ( mole ), which could be used to describe the rather prominent hill on which the Torpes settlement is located.

history

Torpes owned a church in 1111, which is consecrated to Saint Veranus of Cavaillon († around 590).

Torpes was long part of the Bellevesvre lordship , which also included Mouthier-en-Bresse . In the 14th century, a de Torpes family appeared as masters of the place. In the 15th century the rule came to Philippe Pot , who issued a charter to the residents in the 15th century . In 1554 Torpes Alexandre de Saulx belonged and in the 18th century it finally came under the ownership of the Montessus as part of Bellevesvre County . The hamlet of Le Portail , however, belonged to Franche-Comté .

After the House of Burgundy died out in the male line in 1477, the Duchy of Burgundy went to France, but the Free County to the Burgundian Empire . The wars in the 16th and 17th centuries (war against the Savoyard Duke Charles Emanuel I , Thirty Years War and War of Devolution ) brought terrible disasters to the place on the outer edge of the Duchy of Burgundy, the whole area was largely depopulated and only recovered very slowly.

The castle had already been demolished in the 18th century; the current church dates from the 19th century and the schoolhouse was completed in 1956. In 1988 there were still 43 farms in the municipality.
