Toponymy

The name probably goes back to the clearing time (racineux = strongly rooted) and is first mentioned in 1190 as Terra Racinosa , in 1310 as domus hospitalis de la Racenousse .

history

The actual core of the community, which indicates a Gallo-Roman settlement, seems to have been Fley , first mentioned in 1190 as Terra de Flix . The hamlet of Bellecroix originally belonged to the Knights Templar , after its destruction the Order of St. John followed as Lords of la Racineuse . La Racineuse has been mentioned as part of Serrigny or Mervans since the 13th century . In 1255 there was an oppitaul (probably a leper colony ), also mentioned is a fortified house in Valgrenans (today Vaugrenand), which is also indicated by the nearby field name Motte . The estate of Vaugrenand belonged to Guy de Verdun in the 12th century and to the Baillet family in the 16th century . Other mansions seem to have been in the hamlets of Fley and les Cours . A half-timbered church was originally located at today's cemetery . The current church, dedicated to John the Baptist , was built in 1897. The largest Domestic Market in northern Bresse took place in the immediate vicinity, always on St. John's Day, for the last time in 1914. The Mairie was built around 1920 opposite the church, it became a teacher's house when the new municipal administration was built. Around a third of the houses are holiday homes. The municipality originally belonged to the canton of Mervans and was assigned to the Canton de Pierre-de-Bresse in 1801 .
